How to remove ‘admin’ username from WordPress

Last updated on May 20, 2019 · Posted in How To · dev process  · user

If you have a login with “admin” as your user name, that can be a security risk, because attackers often start with that username as it is so common.

But you cannot change usernames after they are created.

What I discovered is, you can create a new user with Administrator privileges, and then delete the Admin with the ‘admin’ username.

Here’s how to do that:

  1. Add new user, choose a username you want. Make sure to give admin access, and you need at least one user with admin privileges!
  2. Logout and log back in under the new user.
  3. Delete user with ‘admin’ username.
